Government departments must ensure essential services and business critical functions continue during any event that results in a business disruption. Additionally, IT Disaster Recovery and IT Service Management are pivotal components to ensuring IT services are addressed and maintained during disruptions.
Business Continuity Management requirements are outlined in Section 58 of the Civil Defence Emergency Management Act 2002, Section 19 of the National CDEM Plan 2015 and in the Protective Security Requirements (Gov3).
The purpose of GCRG is to provide an information sharing forum for where they have business continuity practitioners and IT Disaster Recovery (ITDR) and service continuity (SC) practitioners. This includes discussions on practical issues surrounding business continuity and IT disaster recovery. This includes:

- Sharing information, tools, and resources to effectively plan and respond to the impact of a business disruption or ITDR and service continuity
- Developing networks with other business continuity and ITDR/SC practitioners and other related disciplines.
- Increasing education and information in business continuity and ITDR/SC and keeping abreast of industry best practice
- Focusing on the efficiency and effectiveness of arrangements to gain best value for investment in business continuity and ITDR/SC within agencies and across government.
